Taxi Language (2007): The secret language of hailing a cab in Johannesburg With limited public transport in Johannesburg, residents rely on minibus taxis. But don't expect them to stop for you unless you have an in-depth knowledge of taxi sign language. On any street corner in the townships of Johannesburg, you'll see people gesticulating widely. "Pointing your finger up means you want to go to the city", explains one woman. "If you want to go to the station you have to move your arms like a train". But to other drivers, Johannesburg's 50,000 private taxis are the bane of the city. "They suck", states one woman. "They're rude and don't obey the traffic rules". Police in South Africa have clashed with students calling for free education in several cities. Wits University in Johannesburg had been due to reopen on Monday, after demonstrations forced its closure last week. The vice chancellor announced that classes would proceed, and students would be allocated areas in which they could protest. However, the situation quickly deteriorated, with police firing rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the crowds. Angelo Coppola was there.
Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Johannesburg on Wednesday calling for the resignation of South African President Jacob Zuma. The protesters marched across Nelson Mandela Bridge carrying placards and shouting anti-Zuma chants. Political analyst Prince Mashele was among those who delivered speeches in front of the gathered crowd, saying "power to the people, power. Comrades, the message is clear - if the African National Congress [ANC] does not remove Zuma, this is the beginning of something they have never seen." December 6 - Johannesburg's population is increasing by 10,000 people a month. And the city is calling on urban designers and architects to help shape their vision of the future. An estimated R35-billion will be spent on infrastructure to bring people closer to where they work.

In 1999 Amanda Gcabashe went on a one-way trip into what she calls a “parallel universe” when she accepted her ancestors’ calling to become a traditional healer, or sangoma in the South African lexicon. With her day-job in the corporate world, she finds herself in the paradoxical situation of living two very different lives. It would be fair to expect this dichotomous existence—one foot in the ancient world of ancestors and spirits, and another in the modern world of boardrooms and pie charts—to unsettle her. But Amanda is not at all fazed. In this TEDxJohannesburg 2015 talk, she shares thoughts about the complexities and contradictions of her life, and reveals startling ideas that shatter conventional wisdom on the true limits of the human experience. When she answered her ancestors’ ...
Thousands of supporters of South Africa's Economic Freedom Fighters (EEF) party marched on the streets of Johannesburg on Tuesday. The party is calling for higher wages and salaries, the nationalization of mines and state-owned banks, and the banning of listed companies assisting financially in tertiary education. EEF leader Julius Malema said he wanted to see every company registered with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) hand over 51 percent of their shares to their workers. Now known for his caustic criticism of South Africa's president, Malema used to be one of Zuma's most vocal supporters. As the militant president of the ruling party's youth league, Malema said in 2008 that he would kill for Zuma, who was then the country's deputy president facing hundreds of corruption charg...

Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. In contrast to Johannesburg, ...
